Preliminary Task: Cover Page

Below is the final product of my cover page. I used a Canva template for inspiration, and I added some further edits to my main image.

Preliminary Task: Editing Cover Photo

I have decided on the image I will use for my magazine cover. I used befunky.com. a free editing website that I found. I edited the picture's lighting to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

Preliminary Task: Cover Photo Options

Below are the different photos I have taken for my preliminary task cover page.

Preliminary Task: Overview

I will begin to work on my preliminary task to enhance my skills in photography, editing, and composing the magazine. I will use templates from Canva for inspiration for my cover and contents page. I want to learn more about the editing aspect behind creating the magazine to be better prepared for the final task.  Every photograph that I use will be taken by me, and I will be the one editing them. All of the work done for this project will be completely original. I look forward to sharing the final product.  Sources: https://www.canva.com/photos/MADyQ4hJGCU-pink-mug-and-magazine/

Moodboard

The pictures below are some of my inspiration for the future photographs I will take for my magazine. For some pictures I liked the outfits, lighting, editing, and/or shots. I am noticing that I like the pictures with the colored, dim lighting. I will continue to browse through more inspiration to determine the details for my pictures.

Contents Page Examples

Today I will be looking at different contents pages from magazines. I will analyze their styles and conventions for inspiration for my contents page. I like that the contents page above uses a wide range of colors to number their articles, but still makes it easy to read. In part, this is because of the white background. I also like that the page is not overcrowded. This contents page does not include a main image. I like the font they used for the numbers because it makes the number outlines look better.  The contents page above uses up half of the page for their contents and the other half for their main image.   I prefer the contents page having a main image, but I think the formatting above leaves the text crammed. It has a color scheme of red, black, and white. For my page, I would like it to have more colors or a color that stands out more. I like the font that they used for the subheadings.  I like how the contents page above used the main image as the background. I think this g

Contents Conventions

The contents page helps organize the magazine and makes it easier for readers to find specific topics or articles. Different magazines use different layouts and features for their contents page. Today, I will be going over the main conventions that magazines tend to use. Title                                                                                                                                                                       For starters, this page always includes the title "Contents" to let readers know that it is the spot where they will find the magazine's outline.  Main Image                                                                                                                                                           This is the large image featured on the page. At times, the contents page may have more than one image or even none.  Subheadings

Hip-hop Costumes & Props

Today I will look at various hip-hop magazine covers and focus on the artists' clothing and props. This may incorporate jewelry, shoes, accessories, and anything else that covers are placing emphasis on.  On the cover above, Lauryn Hill's shirt is coordinated with the light yellow background color. She wears minimal jewelry of earrings, a ring, and a bracelet. I noticed that her dark lipstick and makeup help accentuate her natural features.  On this cover, there are not many props besides Travis Scott's, jewelry. His chains draw the most attention, while his rings are not as visible. The pink background places all of the attention on him and his serious demeanor. Though his jewelry are his main props, they do not divert the attention from his face. For the magazine cover above, Meek Mill's various chains draw the most attention. He is wearing a watch on the hand with which he is grabbing his chains, which places emphasis on both accessories. Meek Mill is shirtless, allo

Using Mise-en-scene

Before I begin my photoshoot(s), I want to research the different aspects that compose mise-en-scene. My research will help me put together the scene of my photoshoot. For starters, mise-en-scene consists of everything that is captured in a shot. The different components all contribute in creating the aesthetic of the shot. The main characteristics are the setting, decorations, costume and/or makeup, lighting, and expressions. Setting The setting is the place in which the photograph or film takes place. It can be a natural location or inside of a studio. The setting is important because it usually helps the audience have a better perception of what is occurring. The picture below is one of a natural scene. If this were the background of a photoshoot or a film, the audience would make some associations between the plot and the character. Sometimes settings are used for their aesthetic, while other times they have a larger significance. Decorations The decorations often have large signif

Model Planning

After considering different cover pages' color schemes, I have noticed there are always artists on the covers. I want to feature an artist in my magazine as well, but it will be challenging given that I have been social distancing due to COVID-19. I am planning on implementing as many safety measures as possible during the photoshoot(s). I will wear a mask and get tested for COVID-19 prior to the photoshoot, and I will ask my model to do the same. COVID-19 will restrict me from having various models in the same picture, unless they all wear masks. If we can coordinate their masks with their outfit, the photos will look more aesthetically pleasing.  I will begin searching for potential models that I will feature. For my cover, I will feature a Black female model, as that was what most of my peers suggested in the questionnaire I created. I think it will be a good way of empowering Black women, especially given that males are often over credited in the hip-hop industry.  Source: http

Color Schemes

Today I will compare several magazine covers' color schemes to continue brainstorming for my own. The color palette will be under each cover picture. My favorite color schemes are those from the first two magazine covers. The first one has more pastel and almost neutral colors that my classmates suggested. I think it would be a good look, but with one bright color to stand out. I like the pastel colors in the second cover because there are light and dark colors to contrast each other, making it more visually appealing.

Questionnaire Evaluation

Last week, I recorded my questionnaire results. Today, I will be analyzing them to determine the next steps I will take to create my magazine. The demographics questions I asked showed me that most of the responses came from females between 17 to 18. I received responses from Black, white, Asian, and Hispanic students. I must create my magazine in a way that is appealing and welcoming to all races and ethnicities. The majority of the students voted that they do not feel their racial group is underrepresented in hip-hop magazines, but some students still voted otherwise. Most of the students who voiced this opinion were white Hispanics and one of them was Black.  Most of the voters said that I should use a color scheme with neutral colors for my magazine. This is one of the most helpful aspects of the questionnaire for me because I have been unable to decide on a color scheme.  In addition, the top two categories that my audience voted to see are artists' insights on unreleased mus
