Double-Page Spread Conventions

A double-page spread is an article that features their story on two consecutive pages. Since they are usually visually appealing, they receive more attention from general audiences. Below I will list some of the main conventions I have learned about.

Headline / Title

The title is usually in a large font because it gives a generalization of what is featured on the spread. Most of the time, headlines are not too long because they are sneak peeks to attract audiences to read through the article.

Stand first

The stand first is an introduction/summary of the rest of the article. Like the headline, it serves to get people intrigued to read the full article.

Pull quote

When double-page spreads include interviews, they oftentimes take quotes from the person and place them around the spread in a larger font. This is done to make people want to read the article to get context behind the quote.

Image

The image is often the biggest emphasis on the double-page spread. It can be shown across both pages, or just on one. The image can establish the color scheme for the rest of the spread.

Color scheme

The color scheme entails the different colors used throughout the spread. Most of the time, the colors contrast each other in some way or they are coordinated. I think this component is one of the most important because it can determine how visually appealing the double-page spread looks.

Language

The language is the tone of the article/story. Usually, it is informal and emotive language. It can always vary depending on what the article is discussing, and the seriousness of the topic.

While there are more double-page spread conventions than those above, I listed the main ones that I will have to consider before I create my own. I am still unsure on my color scheme, but I know that the article I feature will be written in an informal, relaxed tone to discuss a Hip-Hop artist.

Evaluation Question 1: How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

Below is the link to my YouTube video: https://youtu.be/dDTCcIevXUc   Transcript Hello. My name is Kelly Lopez, and I will be answering compulsory question 1. The question is "How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?" Throughout my magazine I incorporated images such as the cover image on the cover page. I had mastheads, a barcode, subheadings, a tagline, an issue number, a date, columns, editor information, and even color schemes. I maintained the color scheme throughout the cover page, the contents page, and the double page spread. I kept my fonts the same for my cover page as opposed to using alternating ones throughout. I felt that this helped make my cover more aesthetically pleasing and more simplistic. I tried to ensure that any images featured were always the center of the attention in the design. In one way or another everything else on the page ensured that the readers stayed captivated and that they focu...

Genres

Today, I have researched various popular genres of magazines. Before magazines became mainstream, they were only accessible to higher classes because of how expensive they were. During this time, there were not many magazine genres to choose from; most genres were focused on literary and educational topics. When the cost of mass printing decreased, magazines became more affordable for working class as well. It was during this time that a larger variety of magazine genres became more popular.  Literary magazines were one of the main magazines that existed. They focus on the publication of various literary works. This type of magazine is more inclined towards educational purposes.  News  magazines are informational. They discuss important events that are occurring. Many news magazines have conformed to current times, so they are now online.   Science magazines are a popular type of magazine that are still commonly known. These tend to be less formal, but are also edu...

Questionnaire Evaluation

Last week, I recorded my questionnaire results. Today, I will be analyzing them to determine the next steps I will take to create my magazine. The demographics questions I asked showed me that most of the responses came from females between 17 to 18. I received responses from Black, white, Asian, and Hispanic students. I must create my magazine in a way that is appealing and welcoming to all races and ethnicities. The majority of the students voted that they do not feel their racial group is underrepresented in hip-hop magazines, but some students still voted otherwise. Most of the students who voiced this opinion were white Hispanics and one of them was Black.  Most of the voters said that I should use a color scheme with neutral colors for my magazine. This is one of the most helpful aspects of the questionnaire for me because I have been unable to decide on a color scheme.  In addition, the top two categories that my audience voted to see are artists' insights on unre...
