Genres

Today, I have researched various popular genres of magazines. Before magazines became mainstream, they were only accessible to higher classes because of how expensive they were. During this time, there were not many magazine genres to choose from; most genres were focused on literary and educational topics. When the cost of mass printing decreased, magazines became more affordable for working class as well. It was during this time that a larger variety of magazine genres became more popular.

Literary magazines were one of the main magazines that existed. They focus on the publication of various literary works. This type of magazine is more inclined towards educational purposes.

News magazines are informational. They discuss important events that are occurring. Many news magazines have conformed to current times, so they are now online.

Science magazines are a popular type of magazine that are still commonly known. These tend to be less formal, but are also educational. They may discuss different research that is being done as well as new discoveries.

Sports magazines are mostly read by people who spend their leisure time informing themselves on sports. They may feature athletes and different sports teams. Sometimes, they may include health/fitness articles. In a time with easily accessible technology many tend to get sports updates through applications on their phones or the internet.

Music magazines are also published for entertainment purposes. They usually feature certain artists/interviews, new albums, and upcoming events.

Celebrity magazines are another type of entertainment genre. They may feature interviews with different celebrities (actors, singers, models etc.). Sometimes these magazines involve different rumors/gossip surrounding the celebrities.

There are many more genres than the ones I listed above, but these were the ones I have more interest towards. This research activity has helped me develop a better understanding of the different magazine types/ what they tend to discuss.

Questionnaire Evaluation

Last week, I recorded my questionnaire results. Today, I will be analyzing them to determine the next steps I will take to create my magazine. The demographics questions I asked showed me that most of the responses came from females between 17 to 18. I received responses from Black, white, Asian, and Hispanic students. I must create my magazine in a way that is appealing and welcoming to all races and ethnicities. The majority of the students voted that they do not feel their racial group is underrepresented in hip-hop magazines, but some students still voted otherwise. Most of the students who voiced this opinion were white Hispanics and one of them was Black.  Most of the voters said that I should use a color scheme with neutral colors for my magazine. This is one of the most helpful aspects of the questionnaire for me because I have been unable to decide on a color scheme.  In addition, the top two categories that my audience voted to see are artists' insights on unre...
