Women in Hip-Hop Magazines

Ever since hip-hop has been popular, it has been an industry dominated by men. Many male artists are credited for their legacies left on the genre, while women are overlooked. However, female artists like Lil Kim, Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah, Remy Ma, and many others have made large impacts on the sound of hip-hop and the way it is perceived. Not only have they paved the way for many of the currently popular hip-hop artists, they have impacted different cultures and popularized different fashion styles.

It is because of those artists that there are currently many women bringing forth their unique styles to the genre today. An abundant amount of hip-hop magazines feature male artists on the cover photo. As more female artists have grown in the platform, it is becoming more normalized for women to be featured on the magazine covers.

Though there has been progress, we have lots of room left for improvement. There is still a double-standard regarding women in hip-hop compared to that of men. Unfortunately, many still favor men which makes women have to work much harder to prove themselves in the genre.

There are many young boys with dreams of being rappers. Seeing countless successful male rappers can inspire them and motivate them to work towards their dream. However, there are young girls who share the same dream who do not see as many female rappers on the media. The lack of representation for women can impact young girls, leaving them to think their goal is unattainable. For this reason, it is essential to provide women the same platform that men are given in hip-hop.

Today, I have researched various popular genres of magazines. Before magazines became mainstream, they were only accessible to higher classes because of how expensive they were. During this time, there were not many magazine genres to choose from; most genres were focused on literary and educational topics. When the cost of mass printing decreased, magazines became more affordable for working class as well. It was during this time that a larger variety of magazine genres became more popular. Literary magazines were one of the main magazines that existed. They focus on the publication of various literary works. This type of magazine is more inclined towards educational purposes.
